"cruddy stick doodles about real life events"
Public Domain Treasures
Collection of public domain art organized into categories with an aesthetic book design.
Punp
'Throwaway nonsense goo-goo practice art which is actively detracting from my online portfolio and causing me problems' - Punp
Walrus Island
Vaporwave themed art galleries by Koopa with re-occuring characters
xkcd
The Internet's original "web comic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language." Worth noting: These old web comic sites are very good about linking to other comic strips so you can find dozens more from here.
Zacko
'A common trope you'll find with all of these are lowbrow subjects rendered as `fine art`' - Zacko

Blog cataloging real emo and hardcore albums since 2013
Sophie's Floorboard

What the heck *is* emo, anyway?
Primer on the Gen X era of Emo. This site has been around for years and is a window into what emo was like before MySpace.
Vaporwave
Arcology Online
Articles and interviews in vaporwave space with a very good sized collection of links and resources to external sites.
Nightwave Plaza
Online vaporwave and future funk radio station with aesthetic backgrounds and network streams.
Utopia District
A site that gives me a bit of nostalgia for quarantine-era livestream events. I was paying a lot of attention to the vaporwave scene because of this community at the time.
America's Decline
The vibe is like: You're out shopping in the early 2000s and coming up to the checkout, you pass those stands of magazines with Britney Spears and Katy Perry on the front cover. A variety of stuff but the bulk of content is pop music related.
OverClocked Remix
Before Spotify, Bandcamp, YouTube, Soulseek, Limewire, or Napster, there was this weird site of people remixing video game music. At the time VGM wasn't respected as real music, so hearing people render it as classical or dance music, it was extremely novel and moreover one of the earliest places I know of that you could download free music.
World Playground Deceit
Posts about music, film, programming, and other subjects, but the music reviews featuring dark music and extreme metal are my favorite sections.
Writing
Blogs
Andrei
Romanian webmaster who frequently updates modern website with E/N content going back to 2002.
chxshire22
Fellow tinkerer, nerd, hackery enthusiast and cyberpunk enjoyer. The writing is informal but personally revealing. Nice design too.
LostintheCycle
Book reviews with an interesting rating system + blog posts and original poetry.
Luke Smith's Webpage
He writes coherrently about subjects that interest me with sometimes opposite perspectives from mine. His site is a portal to many things not limited to pseudoscience and religious agenda.
Mainpaint
Thoughts on video games, technology, archival, and various topics.
powRSS
Aggregator of blog posts all across the indie web powered by RSS. You can add your blog to it as well.
RisingThumb.xyz
Feels like exploring scattered text files on someone's computer. A large amount of content on subjects ranging from technology to philosophy.
The Webyard of Vitnira | Digital Nemeton
Recommended for those interested in Pre-Christian Europe, which is of course a favorite subject of mine.
Xah Lee Blog
Excursion in math, programing, visual arts, humanities since 1995.
Fiction
DreamReach
Interesting site with a webnovel called Fantasy Quest. The blog posts are sequentially rendered into the page after clicking a "download" button, strongly encouraging you to start at the beginning rather than jump ahead. Not sure I love that but worth a look.
STEKI Project
Attractive art-based design with interesting "Layer" navigation. The primary content is Immaterial Contest, an Unreal Tournament 99 inspired fiction with 19 chapters as of this entry.
News
Web3 is Going Just Great
Timeline of logged and archived news articles, blog and social media posts highlighting blockchain failures.
Forums
Agora Road
A vaporwave and nostalgia forum with an undeserved reputation for harboring schizoids. Practically it's a refuge from highly moderated spaces for people all over the world whose values tend towards reactionary.
Basement Community
Small forum with custom software and just enough modern polish. It imitates Something Awful in ways: public sanctions on users, similar new user avatar. Although I don't get the impression that most users are aware of the homage.
Black Hat World
This is a shady Internet marketing forum. You can learn a lot here but be aware that everyone will scam you if you let them. The entire forum is built on scamming ignorant people. You can learn a lot but you can't take everything said at face value. Don't give anyone your money unless you know what you're doing. Just lurk and be skeptical.
Bladerunners
'For people to chat about tech related things, document their journey in exploring fun stuff etc. Don't take it too seriously' - chxshire22
Blue Dwarf
Cozy board that reminds me of Hacker News for people trying to escape the modern Internet. Its most notable feature is that it supports unencrypted use, making it appealing to users with ancient devices who aren't worried about the encryption.
Niggas in Space
Shitposting zone for jaded old timers with a history of either casual racism or substance abuse.
Retro Game Talk
Pretty active forum where you can freely discuss retro games, emulation, romhacking, and other taboo gaming subjects.
Something Awful
Y2K era forum known for its significant influence on Internet culture. Well past its prime; it's a retirement home for people that remember it.
Trouble Free Pool
This is the best place on the Internet to get mostly unbiased information about home pool maintenance. Something you figure out when you get a pool is that the products are expensive and almost all knowledge that is out there is designed to take advantage of your ignorance and push you towards products that make you dependent on spending more. This is required reading for anyone who is going to maintain a pool.
Games
A Dark Room
An idle-adventure game that starts out simple and surprises you with each new complexity; made with vanilla Javascript
Final Fantasy VI: Brave New World
A romhack of the game that is significantly more difficult than the original. Don't feel guilty at all for using this document to help you beat it. It's intended for you to have it while playing.
NEAL.FUN
Clever Javascript games and experiences that often seem to be making meta commentary. Maybe I'm imagining it.
Nicky Case
Gamedev and frontend developer with design and art skills makes stuff.
Tardquest
Mildly edgy dungeon crawler with ASCII art, graphical enhancements and a leader board; made with vanilla Javascript
XP Service Pack 4
A nostalgic fake operating system site built with React has a popup closing game. Nice warm up for FPS players maybe.
Comedy
DukeNukemIs.Cool
The webmaster's real belief in every conspiracy you've ever heard of is offset by her passion for niche hobbies and genuine talent at comedy. Read her writings and watch her videos, just not in front of other people.
JEFFK's NEW AND EMPROVED HOEMAPEG
Parody website immitating preteen gamer kids of the late 90s who were convinced they were the most 31337 of H4X0RS.
Krazy Keith's 'ATE MY BALLS' Links Page
ATE MY BALLS was a 1990's Internet meme that spawned from saying, "Mr. T Ate My Balls." Pages were made of other celebrities and entities declaring that they, too, ATE MY BALLS. This site attempted to collect them all, and while the site is still up, most of the ATE MY BALLS pages it links to are down. So I've provided the archive.org link so you can browse them.
Tails Gets Trolled

Tools
88x31 Button Generators
Not a terrible place to start if you want one of those snazzy oldweb style link buttons but don't have any art skills.
by datakra.sh
This one has a variety of preset backgrounds that go well together and output a non-animated button.
by pixelwolf.net
At first glance this one seems better because you can mix animated gifs and text into the buttons but the output and input don't line up accurately so you have to mess with the positioning to get it right.
ColorKit
Good for building color palettes. Enter a color, pivot to darker, brighter, more saturated, or complementary colors.
wttr.in
A weather API that produces a simple ASCII page over the web but has a lot of features that can be used from a console. Check the github repo to get the full documentation.

PackardBell95
Surreal audio/visual fortune teller experience with heavy vaporwave influence; new fortune every day.
TheSomething
'weird web experiments with javascript & php'
Chat
AnonOps IRC
An old IRC network that claims to have been associated with 2000's hacktivist group Anonymous. I've never connected to their network before but they have good tutorials to get you started with IRC which is why I recommend the page. That server itself is probably filled with feds just FYI. Let me know if you try it out and it's a cool chat space.
hardcord
If you're not already using Discord, please don't start using it just to chat with me. But if you are already a degenerate, you can find me on here.

Links
There is some temptation to build on top of other link directory sites, but as I want the portal to go hard in its own way, I will simply direct you to these other sites.
Search Engines
Search engines are essentially link directories built by web crawlers that can be queried. Here are some small ones.
Marginalia
"Nothing you do to try to make the web a better place matters if nobody can find what you did. There are a lot of precious websites out there that deserve an audience, but instead are languishing in obscurity."
Wiby
Emphasis on collecting websites with simple HTML without a lot of bloated scripts.
Free Media Heck Yeah
Starting as a primer and harm reduction guide on piracy, it's now an exhaustive wiki of free resources and Internet services.
Open Directory Project (ODP)
Based on DMOZ (directory mozilla) RDF, which was owned by AOL, it was maintained by volunteer editors for decades, and this site is an archive of that directory created when AOL closed the project. The links here will be very old.
Peelopaalu
Unsorted collection. There are sites here from the 90's and sites that were made last week. Maintained from 2019-2024.
Mine
I am the maintainer of this page BTW. Some of my sites:

Sometimes a link doesn't fit neatly into its given category because it's a variety site. In such cases I just pick a spot that feels right in the moment.
